Society
Everything so far in these docs works alone, offline, forever. Society is the optional other half: writing with people.
Society is its own subscription (£7/month) and includes Guild, the relay that powers multi-device sync — you buy Society instead of Guild, not alongside it. The desktop app is complete without either; Society adds, it never gates.
Circles
Section titled “Circles”A Circle is a writing group: a shared room with chat, member profiles, and a critique flow.
- Chat — threads, reactions, pinned messages.
- Submissions — share a piece of your Manuscript with the Circle for critique; readers respond with comments and suggested edits you can review and take or leave.
- Challenges — group writing challenges with a points ledger, if your Circle likes a scoreboard.

Letters
Section titled “Letters”A Letter is a direct message to another writer — one-to-one, end-to-end encrypted. Trove’s servers route sealed envelopes; they cannot read what’s inside. See Encryption for exactly what that means.
Writers
Section titled “Writers”Every Society member has a handle (@you@trove.ink) and a profile. Follow writers to keep up with them; your Circles and your follows are the whole social graph — there is no algorithmic feed to lose an afternoon to.
What the server can and can’t see
Section titled “What the server can and can’t see”Your manuscripts never leave your machine in plaintext. What you deliberately share into a Circle or a Letter is encrypted on your device to the members’ keys (MLS, RFC 9420) before it goes anywhere. The full contract, including what metadata a relay necessarily sees, is in the threat model.
No Guild, no loss
Section titled “No Guild, no loss”Without a Society subscription, everything in the local app keeps working — Society surfaces simply stay closed. Subscribe later and your handle, Circles, and Letters start from there.
